Office 2000 and 2002 include a feature called round-tripping, which is designed to make it easy to create and edit HTML documents in programs like Word. Unfortunately, the feature comes at a significant cost: HTML files created in Word include a lot of unnecessary, nonstandard formatting tags.

To address this problem, Microsoft created the Office HTML Filter, a free standalone program that can strip the Office-specific formatting out of an HTML file created in Word or Excel.
